Two Dead In Fires That Have Already Engulfed Several Homes

Deadly California Wildfires Trigger Evacuations

Two killed in fires that have engulfed several homes

Latest on the Dixie and River fires as of Aug. 5, 2021

Two people have died in wildfires burning in Northern California, as thousands of residents were forced to evacuate their homes and firefighters worked to contain the blazes.

The Dixie Fire in Butte County, California, which started on July 13, has grown to more than 186,000 acres and destroyed at least 67 structures. The fire is just 35% contained and is the second-largest active fire in the U.S., after the Bootleg Fire in Oregon.

The River Fire in Placer County, California, started on Aug. 4 and has scorched at least 11,000 acres. The fire is only 10% contained.

Both fires are burning in dry, rugged terrain, and weather conditions are not helping firefighters.

High temperatures, low humidity and gusty winds are expected to continue throughout the week, according to the National Weather Service.

Evacuations are in place for multiple communities in Butte and Placer counties. Residents should follow the instructions of local officials and be prepared to leave their homes.

Firefighters are making progress on both fires, but it is too early to say when they will be contained.

Here are some tips to stay safe during a wildfire:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and listen for any updates from local officials.
  • If you are instructed to evacuate, do so immediately.
  • Take only essential belongings and be prepared to be away from your home for several days.
  • Stay away from the fire and smoke.
  • If you do come into contact with smoke, cover your nose and mouth with a damp cloth.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated.
