Early Life and Education
Droupadi Murmu was born on 20 June 1958 in a small village called Uparbeda in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, India. She belongs to the Santhal tribe, an indigenous community in India.
Murmu completed her schooling from the Uparbeda Upper Primary School and later attended the Rama Devi Women's College in Bhubaneswar, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Arts.
Political Career
Murmu's political journey began in 1997 when she was elected as a councilor to the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. She served as a councilor for five years before being elected as the Vice-Chairperson of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 2002.
In 2009, Murmu was elected as the MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) from the Rairangpur constituency on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. She served as the Minister of State for Commerce and Transport in the Odisha government from 2000 to 2004.
Governor of Jharkhand
In 2015, Murmu was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand, a state in eastern India. She was the first woman to hold this position in Jharkhand.
During her tenure as Governor, Murmu focused on issues such as tribal welfare, women's empowerment, and education. She also played a key role in promoting the state's cultural heritage.
15th President of India
In July 2022, Murmu was elected as the 15th President of India, becoming the first tribal woman to hold this position.
Murmu's election is a significant milestone in Indian history, as it represents the growing political representation of marginalized communities in the country.
