A War Hero and Statesman

John Sidney McCain III, born August 29, 1936, in the Panama Canal Zone, was an American politician and United States Navy officer who served as a United States senator for Arizona from 1987 to 2018.

The Vietnam War

McCain's military service began in 1958 when he graduated from the United States Naval Academy. In 1968, he was appointed commanding officer of the USS Forrestal (CV-59), which was attacked and severely damaged by a fire. McCain distinguished himself during the rescue operations, for which he was awarded the Navy Cross.

Later that year, McCain was shot down over North Vietnam and held as a prisoner of war for five and a half years. During his captivity, he was subjected to torture and mistreatment, but he refused to give his captors any military information.

A Political Career

After his release from captivity, McCain returned to the United States and resumed his naval career. He retired from the Navy in 1981 and entered politics.

McCain was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982 and to the U.S. Senate in 1986. He served on the Senate Armed Services Committee and was a leading critic of the Iraq War.

A Legacy of Service

John McCain died on August 25, 2018, at the age of 81. He was a decorated war hero and a dedicated public servant who served his country with honor and distinction.
