Shelley Duvall, Star of "The Shining" and Altman Films, Dies at 75
Actress Known for Eccentric Roles
Shelley Duvall, the actress whose lithesome features and quirky screen personality made her one of the biggest film stars of the 1970s, has died. Duvall, 75, was best known for her roles in The Shining and several acclaimed Robert Altman films.
A Career-Defining Role
Duvall's breakthrough role came in Altman's 1970 film MASH, in which she played a naive army nurse. She went on to star in Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), Thieves Like Us (1974), and Nashville (1975).
But it was her portrayal of Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror classic The Shining that cemented her status as a cult icon. Duvall's performance as the terrified wife of Jack Nicholson's unhinged character is considered one of the most iconic in horror movie history.
